Finding the right DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) consultant for Blinkist was a crucial step in advancing our DEI initiatives.

These kinds of projects are often perceived to be the responsibility of HR teams, and in truth, HR teams often take them on. However, you can’t expect these teams to automatically know how to run this kind of project, especially given that they’re often tangled up in day-to-day operations.

Hiring an external DEI consultant gives the expertise and  perspective it need. Consultants, who are seen as experts, will have studied the field and will bring relevant experience from various companies of different sizes and settings. They will have the expertise to tell guide your internal staff toward the right actions and away from those that may do more harm than good..

If you don’t know where to start, here are my tips to find the right DEI consultant for your company:

  1. Determine your DEI goals and priorities: Before you start your search for a consultant, take some time to define your company’s DEI goals and priorities with the key stakeholders at your organization. This will help you identify what type of expertise you need in a consultant and what skills they should possess.
  2. Research potential consultants: Start by looking for consultants who specialize in DEI and have experience working with companies in your industry. Use online resources such as LinkedIn, the consultant’s website, and professional organizations to research their background, experience, and approach to DEI work.
  3. Check references: Get in touch with other companies that have worked with the consultant you are interested in and ask about their experiences. This can provide valuable insights into the consultant’s effectiveness and how they work with clients.
  4. Assess compatibility: Schedule a meeting or call with the consultant to discuss your DEI goals and priorities. This will allow you to assess their communication style, approach to DEI work, and whether you feel comfortable working with them.
  5. Evaluate their services and fees: Make sure you understand the services the consultant provides and the fees associated with their work. Compare this information with other consultants you are considering to determine the best value for your company.
  6. Make a decision: Based on the information you’ve gathered, select the DEI consultant who you believe is the best fit for your company’s DEI goals and priorities, and set up an evaluation period to see how things have progressed over certain milestones

Remember that finding the right DEI consultant is an important investment in your company’s future. By taking the time to find the right person for the job, you can ensure that your DEI initiatives are successful and sustainable.
